Golf is a great alternative, or addition, to sports such as football, rugby, hockey, or netball. With less wear and tear on your body than contact or high impact sports, it is a game you can play until you are much older.


Golf burns off more energy than you’d think: playing an 18-hole game of golf uses a massive 900 calories at least – maybe even more if you carry your own golf bag. Golf also offers all the known weight-loss benefits of walking combined with the toning and muscle strengthening benefits of swinging the clubs and carrying or pulling your golf bag.


Golf is also a great way to top up your Vitamin D levels, manufactured naturally when skin is exposed to sunlight, which is crucial for healthy teeth and bones. Combine that with brisk walking around a course, it can help guard against the bone-wasting disease osteoporosis – half of women over the age of 50 will suffer a fracture due to weak bones. Exercising outdoors is also a scientifically-proven way to help improve your mood, stress levels and self-esteem.


Golf can open the door to beautiful locations and golf clubs – many with restaurants, health clubs and shops where you can pick up the latest golfing equipment and fashions.

Golf is all about tactics, techniques and focus – so it’s great for honing these key mental skills that could help you at work. It can help you learn to stay calm under pressure, think strategically, and build up your mental stamina. Golf rewards players who never lose their temper, however stressful the situation, which sometimes can be easier said than done!
